GeeCON 2025: Jaroslav Tulach - Functional Programming with JVM and Truffle.

Summary

Speaker background

Jaroslav Tulach traces a path from 1990s functional programming through NetBeans (first Java IDE in Java), Oracle Labs/GraalVM work, and joining Enso after Oracle Labs recruitment.

Enso introduction

Enso is a dual textual/visual language with one-to-one switching, live programming with instant feedback, and JVM interoperability where Java is the system language. Target users are advanced Excel users, not traditional developers.

Live demo

Starting from a sentence component, he builds a visual pipeline: split on spaces, uppercase a word, repeat three times, reverse text, group steps into a reusable function, then map it across array elements. Edits propagate immediately across the project.

Talk plan

After the demo, the talk was set to cover lessons learned on functional programming atop the JVM. The truncated transcript ends before those JVM lessons are delivered in detail.
