Welcome

### Celebrating 25 Years of Hacker Culture At 00:00, Jeff Moss (The Dark Tangent) takes the main stage to welcome attendees to DEF CON 25, commemorating a quarter-century since he founded the conference in 1993. Moss reflects on DEF CON's humble beginnings as a 100-person farewell party for a friend in Las Vegas, marveling at how it evolved into the world's premier hacker convention, gathering over 25,000 security professionals, researchers, students, and hobbyists.

### From Underground Subculture to Strategic Advisory At 04:20 and 07:38, Moss reflects on the monumental cultural transformation of the cybersecurity landscape over the preceding 25 years. In the early 1990s, hackers were viewed with deep skepticism, suspicion, and legal hostility by corporations and law enforcement. Today, global policymakers, intelligence leaders, and Fortune 500 executives actively seek the advice of the hacker community to secure critical national infrastructure, guide international technology legislation, and design resilient digital systems.

### The Expansion of Community Villages and Specialized Tracks At 09:15, Moss outlines the physical and conceptual reorganization of the conference to accommodate its explosive growth across Caesars Palace, the Flamingo, and neighboring venues. He emphasizes the critical role of specialized Villages—including the Packet Hacking Village, IoT Village, Car Hacking Village, and Biohacking Village—which allow attendees to immerse themselves in hands-on hardware hacking, capture-the-flag competitions, and domain-specific research.

### Preserving Hacker Ethos and Community Integrity Concluding between 11:30 and 13:45, Moss delivers an impassioned reminder of the values that define DEF CON. Despite corporate sponsorships, mainstream media attention, and government attendance, DEF CON remains fundamentally defined by individual curiosity, ethical inquiry, mentorship, and a vibrant counterculture. He encourages attendees to step outside their technical comfort zones, embrace live music and contest events, and carry the spirit of open learning forward into the next quarter-century.
